Jayita Sengupta

Jayita Sengupta, Managing & Chief Editor of Caesurae, is Associate Professor in the department of English, School of Languages and Literature, Sikkim University, India.  She was a Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Faculty at the Comparative Literature Department, Stanford University, California, a visiting faculty at the National Kaohsiung Normal University and Soochow University, Taiwan in 2012 and was a British Council Fellow to United Kingdom in 2000.  Dr. Sengupta has previously taught in various colleges affiliated to Calcutta University and Delhi University. She also received Charles Wallace grant for doctoral research in U.K libraries in 2000; fellowship grant from Indo-American Centre for International Studies (OUCIP), Hyderabad, 1999; fellowship grant from Indian Association for Canadian studies, 2004. She is on the Editorial Board of a peer reviewed journal, namely, Indian Journal for World Literature and Culture (IJOWLAC) and is a guest referee for the Journal of Gender Studies (JGS), Taylor and Francis and  Post-colonial Text (http://postcolonial.org/index.php/pct) Her research interests include Postcolonial studies, gender and psychoanalysis. She has been a contributor to the research carried out by the Institute for Research on Interdisciplinary Studies (IRIS), Jaipur. Sengupta also translates from Bangla to English and vice versa. She has translated Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay's short stories into English (Relationships, Writers Workshop, 2003) and Bani Basu's Gandharbi: Life of a Musician (forthcoming). Among her other books are, The Muffled Heart: Stories of the Disempowered Male with Niladri Chatterjee, Rupa, 2005; and Refractions of Desire: Feminist Perspectives in the Novels of Toni Morrison, Michele Roberts and Anita Desai, Atlantic, 2006. Her most recent book is Barbed Wire: Borders and Partitions in South Asia, Routledge, 2012. She is presently working on a self-funded research project on “History, Memory, Narrative and Time” and on a collection of short stories.
