Kathak,  Indian Classical Workshop and an Evening of  Classical Music,                         Dance and Poetry in Gangtok, October, 2015.

Caesurae: Poetics of Cultural Translation, organized a nine-day long Kathak workshop in Singtam (4th October- 6th October) and Gangtok (7th October-12thOctober) by Namrata Mali, from Delhi, Kathak Kendra in Sikkim. This was followed by a cultural evening  in collaboration with SMIS, Music Department students of Sikkim University, and Samskar Bharati on the 13th October, and an Indian Classical Music Workshop by Shri Bhabani Shankar Dasgupta, the son and disciple of the sarode maestro, Pt. Buddhadeb Dasgupta, on the 15th October.  Sreemati Namrata Mali, talented and professional that she is,  prepared the students of all age groups for the cultural programme on the 13th. Shri Bhabani Shankar’s workshop on Indian Classical, with the young music aspirants in Sikkim was extremely motivating and a rich fare for them. The 13th October’s programme on sarode, Kathak and a transcreation of Joy Goswami’s narrative poem on creative inspiration, “Meghbalika” or “The cloud-girl” was a chiaroscuro of music, dance and poetry graced by many dignitaries like Sri A.K. Srivastava, Chief Secretary, Government of Sikkim, Sri C.P. Dhakal, GMC, Gangtok, Air Marshal, G.S. Juneja. The hall was packed to the brim. Sri Bhabani Shankar Dasgupta, played raga Jayjayanti on sarode. He was accompanied by Sri Subir Adhikari on tabla. Sreemati Namrata Mali, had a solo dance performance. The students of the Music Department Sikkim University played an Indian classical orchestra, on violin, sitar and flute. Young Surjo Sengupta, from KIIT, Bhubaneshwar, who is also the webmaster of the international e journal, “Caesurae”, accompanied Namrata Mali with Malhar moods in the creative collage of  “Meghbalika”. It was surely an evening to be remembered, as artistes from the other parts of the country supported “Caesurae’s” initiative to host such cultural events in Sikkim along with workshops on literature and music.
