Rahman Abbas

Rahman Abbas, writes in Urdu and English and lives in Mumbai. Rahman has Master’s degrees in Urdu and English literature from Mumbai University. His novels are believed to be about forbidden politics and love. Rahman’s maiden Urdu novel Nakhalistan Ki Talash (The Search of an Oasis-2004), written when he was 24, had created a massive storm. Urdu right wing newspapers had carried a campaign and later an FIR was registered against the novel and Rahman had to face the obscenity charges. Moreover, the orthodox elements had forced the educational institution in which he was appointed as Urdu language lecturer to fire him. Under the tremendous pressure of religious forces Rahman was removed from his job in the year 2005.

The novel The Search of an Oasis poses serious questions about identity crisis of Indian Muslim youths in the post Mumbai riots (1992-1993) scenario. However, Rahman received National Award for his second novel EK Mamnua Muhabbat ki Kahani (A Story of a Forbidden Love - 2009) by UCPR (Universal Center for Peace & Research). This novel depicts how Indian Muslims were being radicalized by Tablighi Jamat and indigenous and local culture of Indian Muslims were destroyed by the political version of Islam. This novel was praised by critics like Gopi Chand Narang (former President of Sahitya Academy, New Delhi) and Waris Alavi.

Rahman’s third novel Khuda Ke Saaye Mein Ankh Micholi (Hide and Seek under The Shadow of God-2011) was widely discussed in newspapers, magazines and on TV channels. This novel was judged as ‘Best Book of Fiction-2011′ by State Sahitya Academy. His other contributions to literature include a book of criticism Urdu Novel in 21st Century and an Urdu translation of a famous Marathi book Eka Dishe Cha Shohd (The Search of a Direction) by Marathi scholar Sandeep Waslekar. Rahman’s fourth Novel Rohzeen-The Children of Betrayed Parents will release in English, Hindi

& Urdu very soon.
